Is Apple Patenting an App to Shut Down Jailbreakers?

The Apple is seeking a patent for will be able to shut down iPhones that may be stolen or jailbroken. If you are a Mobile Me user you have a feature that you can locate where your iPhone is if you misplaced it. If you are able to locate the iPhone with the software you can remotely lock it or even whip all the contents effectively disabling the iPhone. It sounds like Apple is attempting to patent and app that would be able to perform this function.

Rumors are spreading that Apple will use this app to search for iPhone infected with app that are not authorized or purchased through the App Store. The logic behind this is that if an iPhone is stolen then the thief would need to jailbreak it in order to use it. Unfortunately, it will not be able to differentiate if you are a thief of just an iPhone owner who jailbreaks their own device.

As recent news has indicated, jailbreaking is legal. How this new app and its use by Apple or AT&T will affect legal jailbreakers it unknown. Still, with this app Apple will have the ability to cripple and shut down any device.

The feature in Mobile Me is a neat thing to have. Whether you have misplaced your iPhone or lost it for real you can find it.
