India have put themselves in a position of strength with a record total of 417 for two at Stumps on Day 1. It started with the 233 run stand between centurions, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir who scored at a very quick rate.
That was followed by a 137 run stand for the second wicket between Gambhir and Rahul Dravid before Muralidaran got rid of a tired looking Gambhir in the last session of play.
Sachin Tendulkar joined Dravid in the middle and the two did well to negotiate the last few overs with the new ball. India look poised to post a mammoth total on the board and ensure that they do not have to bat for a second time in the match.

This is now a four-match series after the abandonment of the 1st ODI due to rain. The two T20 matches were won each a piece by the these teams.
SA allrounder Jackue Kallis has been ruled out of the series due to a rib fracture, so Amla will most probably get another chance to open with Smith.
England have a very dismal ODI record against the South Africans. In 18 matches played so far in SA, England have won just three matches and lost 13
After the T20I series between England and South Africa was tied at one game apiece, the ODI series promises to be as close if not closer. Of course, the five matches should give out a winner – apart from rained off games obviously – but the games could be a lot closer than what one thought originally.
For starters, Andrew Strauss will make a comeback to the side as the captain after missing out the T20Is. Rather strangely, the English side had gone into the shortest format with two different captain; Paul Collingwood and Alastar Cook. For the ODI series, they will have only one skipper, Strauss, as he will lead a more settled side into the five games.
Rahul Dravid added another feather in his cap by reaching the landmark of 11,000 Test runs. He was 177 not out as India reached 385/6 at the end of the day’s play.
What a day it’s been for India! They were tottering at 32/4 but recovered to post their highest score on the first day of a test match. Yuvraj did his bit with a useful knock of 68 before Dravid and Dhoni forged a 224-run stand for the 6th wicket. Dhoni got to his 2nd test century while Dravid went past 11000 runs in tests. Sri Lanka had something to cheer about when Prasad got rid of Dhoni late in the day but it’s India who are on top at this moment.
In all the glare of publicity on Sachin Tendulkar’s 20th anniversary in Indian cricket, it was perhaps forgotten that there was a Test match to be played against an opponent ranked No.2 in the world.
Forgotten by all but one man that is. And it was appropriately enough the only man who has overshadowed Tendulkar with his batting deeds for any considerable length of time. It needed the familiar scenario of India with their backs to the wall for their Mr. Dependable to come out and play an innings that was typical of him in the sense that he got runs when the team needed them most, but also atypical in the sense that he got runs at a pace that one does not normally associate with Rahul Dravid.
What does a cricket team do after losing a home series to a depleted side? How does a player deal with having grassed an opportunity to claim the number one ranking?
Well, if the team in question happens to be India, and if it’s the Indian players who have carelessly choked, when apparently the number one ranking was for the taking, the answer it seems…is PARTYING!
There are undated pictures of Indian cricketers doing the rounds which show them indulging in merry revelry, betraying their often repeated qualm of being over-worked due to a choc-a-bloc itinerary.
Pakistan Cricket Board today announced veteran middle-order Mohammad Yousuf as the captain of the cricket team for the forthcoming Test series versus the New Zealand.
The development is latest in a series of mystifying events that have surrounded the post of captaincy in Pakistan cricket.
PCB chairman Ejaz Butt sought to downplay the episode saying that the change was effected as Younis Khan had sought a break from cricket following the ODI series defeat to New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.
Younus Khan, who led Pakistan to T20 World victory, has been embroiled in controversy ever since.

India wanted to beat Australia and become No 1 in the ODI rankings! and it was possible if they had played to their potential. Australia has won the 7 match series 4-2 and are looking to make it 5-2. Whereas India would like to win this match and keep some pride.
For the second series in a row at home, they head to Mumbai, the heartland of Indian cricket, with the cause hopelessly lost.
Pitch and Conditions
Rain is forecast for tomorrow and the overcast conditions should further encourage the seamers. India’s practice session on the eve of the game was cancelled due to persistent showers.
India will be looking back at the past four matches thinking the scoreline could have easily been 4-0 instead of 2-2 in this 7-match series. India vs Australia Series has consistently promised high quality cricket, with an occasional boom around the corner. If it was Hussey and Harbhajan at Vadodara, it was Dhoni at Nagpur, and Bollinger at Mohali. Sehwag has threatened to explode every time but he’s not yet provided the big bang all Indian fans are waiting for.
For this India vs Australia Series the scoreline stands at 2-2 after the first four matches. However, India should be doing some serious introspection, and if they are honest with themselves, should be hurting inside that the scoreline is not 4-0. Both matches they lost were close, and for a team that wants to be the best in the world, these were the kind of close matches that they should have won.
Australia have now lost two more players in Siddle and Moises Henriques with Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Nathan Bracken and Brett Lee (to say nothing of James Hopes, Callum Fergusson and Tim Paine). Throw in Mitchell Johnson – whose ankle is still a bit dodgy, and Shane Watson – who is never too far from a breakdown, and you have a very decent eleven – Paine, Watson, Fergusson, Clarke, Haddin, Hopes, Henriques, Lee, Johnson, Siddle, Bracken.
